No Idle Talk!: A Workshop on Functional Dialogue


Every line of dialogue should have a good reason for being in a game. It shouldn’t just sound good or be funny—it needs a FUNCTION. Dialogue should be strategic. Here are some things dialogue can do: explain gameplay and new mechanics, give mission objectives, give background/lore, and convey character development. In this workshop, we’ll look at the functions of dialogue in videogames. We’ll then have exercises to practice writing dialogue that is more succinct, strategic, and entertaining.
